FBRI Network Topology

The following outlines the VTCRI network topology: 

INTERNAL FBRI NETWORK (LAN): All wired workstations at the FBRI are connected to the internal network at 1 gigabit per second (1000mb) speeds.  

DATA CENTER NETWORK: All servers and high-performance clusters in the FBRI data center are connected to the research network at 10 gigabit per second (10,000mb/s) speeds.   Connectivity speed between the servers and the primary research data storage is 40 gigabits per second (40,000 mb/s).  


WIDE AREA NETWORK (WAN): 

CURRENT: The FBRI is connected via dual 10 gigabit per second dark fiber links between  the FBRI campus and Blacksburg.  These two links are independent and terminate in separate facilities on the remote end.  Both links are active and are deployed in a redundant configuration.  Should the primary link fail, data traffic will continue to flow using the secondary link until the primary link returns on-line.   Connectivity to the Internet and the VT NCR are provided through these links via Blacksburg. 


FUTURE: Through expansion of the Mid-Atlantic Research Infrastructure Alliance (MARIA), the FBRI and the Roanoke facilities will be connected to Blacksburg and the VT NCR at 100 gigabits per second (1000mb/s). 


CAMPUS NETWORK: All VT facilities in the Riverside campus are connected via dual 10 gigabit per second fiber.
