How to Take a Screenshot in Windows

Do you need to take a screenshot of something you are doing on your Windows machine so that others can see what you were doing or even for your own reference later? There are two ways of taking a shot of your work: one takes a capture of the whole screen, the other way takes a capture of only what you select.

Whole Screen Screenshot:

On your keyboard locate the Print Screen button. It is often abbreviated as <PRTSCN> on the key but you can find it as <PRINT SCREEN> on some models. Please note that on some laptops you have to press <FN>+<PRTSCN> in order for it to work. This copies the screenshot of your entire desktop to the Clipboard. You can now open a program such as "Paint" or even "Microsoft Word" and Paste the contents in. If you want to save a copy of the screenshot, pasting it in "Paint" and saving the file is your best option.

Area Selection Screenshot:

In either Windows 7, Windows 8/8.1, and Windows 10 click the Start Menu button. In the search area type "snipping tool" and click the "Snipping Tool" program that comes up in the search results. Click the "New" button, and with the new mouse cursor, click the upper left edge of what you would like to screenshot with the Left Mouse Button. Continue holding the Left Mouse Button until you have selected the area you want to copy. When you release the Left Mouse Button, a new window will appear with what you have selected. From here you can click "File" then "Save As" and it will save a file with your selection. This can then be attached to an email, inserted into a document, or placed in a folder for future reference.
